Preface

The following story includes many chance encounters, some of which were far reaching, so it is fitting that the idea of writing it was prompted by such a meeting. Gill Osmont, a MacMillan nurse from Jersey was visiting our Hospice. We spoke of Ralph Vibert who was at school with me and who had achieved exalted rank in the States Legislature. She carried a message to him, the outcome of which was a letter from Ralph in which he mentioned his book, "Memoirs of a Jerseyman." Reading this book was the inspiration for me to record some of the incidents in my life that might awaken memories and bring some pleasure to my family and friends. Many are not mentioned specifically in my effort to avoid a "catalogue." None are forgotten.

My thanks to Robert for the typescript.
